They can, you know, and with just a little effort on your part.
The kind of “what if's” I’m talking about are the things we toy with in our minds that we think might be good for the business but rarely see the light of day.
We human beings have a peculiar tendency to put our “what if's” in the same bucket as our “somedays.” But, that’s a bit nonsensical, isn’t it, because our “what if's” have a lot of inherent energy that naturally wants to come to life but, “someday,” by definition, never comes.
So, what’s up with that?
Here’s an idea. Instead of packing your “what if's” away with your holiday decorations, why not keep them out, look at them, feel them, and decide once and for all, what you’re going to do with them. Caution: this is not the time to think about “HOW.” That will only get in your way.
Your job right now is to decide “what” you really want to transpire in your business, why you want it, what the benefits will be, and then take the appropriate action.
Some folks jump in with both feet when they find an idea they believe they can’t not do. They’re the ones who willingly and regularly reach for the stars. They just have that thing; they can’t help themselves. They become singular of focus, and they’re off to the races. But, what happens if that isn’t you? Your “what if” is likely just as viable as theirs is, I’ve no doubt. So, how can you generate the courage it will take for you to jump in, too?
We’re really dancing around the topic of fear, and the interesting thing about fear is that it can only live within us if we unconsciously extend it the hospitality to do so. But, if we can consciously put our foot down, grab it by the scruff of the neck and look it squarely in the face, it will lose its power and can no longer exist. As Eleanor Roosevelt so wisely said:
"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
I hate to admit this but a brief example of what I’m talking about comes from my own experience as recently as last week. I had some work to do for a client that I found myself dreading. I was feeling insecure about my ability to do it. I avoided it for days allowing all sorts of negative feelings to come up. But, once I sat down and started working on it, breaking it down into doable pieces, I found myself feeling excited about it and wanting do the best job I could for my client. As I think back on it, I realize how silly it was to waste all that time embroiled in doubt especially when I know better.
So, for those of us who are natural second-guessers, doubters and inveterate holder-backers, there is a tried and true way to reach for the stars that will require that little bit of effort I talked about at the beginning of this article.
Get crystal clear on “what” you really want to transpire in your business, why you want it, what the benefits will be, and then take the appropriate action.
If you think that sounds easier said than done, think again because in truth, it isn’t hard but it is the thing that most people don’t do which is why they don’t act on the things that matter to them.
The little bit of effort you need to expend is to work with someone who is experienced at asking you the right questions, brainstorming the possibilities and helping you mold it into a plan that will allow you discover the clarity you need.
Then, one of two things will happen: you’ll either decide it is the thing you want to pursue or it isn’t but the good news is, you’ll know why and then you’ll move on to the next thing, knowing that you have a process that works to keep you in positive, forward-moving action.
